In the last 25 years I have repaired few thousand string instruments: violins, violas, and acoustic guitars.... I have had a pleasure working on restorations with few respected luthiers such as Tomas Keller, Jorg Scherbaum, Joe Campagna, Kenneth Bachelder, Bozo Podunavac, Huge McFarland. What's the difference between repairs and restorations ? In case of repairs certain parts that are broken or damaged are fixed so that instrument is able to function correctly and in case of restorations that same thing counts, however a lot of detail has to be taken care of, like authentic color of the lacquer or schelaque or any other lacquer, also in case of missing woods, exact kind of wood need to be placed in the missing part.
